Districts: Which Ones Are Mine?

A voting district is a geographic area that delineates a group of voters based on where they live. It may also be known as an electoral district or election district. There are four types and United States citizens usually live in multiple districts, as follows:

This includes all registered NJ voters who choose

  • the President and Vice President of the U.S. (via the electoral college)
  • two U.S. Senators
  • the NJ Governor and Lieutenant Governor

This defines the area, apportioned by population, for voters to choose their local member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

NJ has 40 State Legislative districts. Voters in each district choose one NJ Senator and two NJ General Assembly representatives. Legislative elections are held in November of each odd-numbered year.

Local counties and cities or townships have their own legislative bodies. Voters in each county choose a Board of Commissioners, a Clerk and a Sheriff. Voters in local districts choose a Mayor, City or Township Council members and School Board members.
